This June 21 solar eclipse contains a lot of potency because it is annular (ring of fire) eclipse, and it occurs at the first degree (0) of Cancer. It belongs to the Saros Series 137, which originated in the fourth nodal family from the north on May 25, 1389 which corrects to June 2, 1389 at 4:57 pm with the Gregorian calendar. It originated at the 12th degree of Gemini, sub-ruled by Venus (Libra) in both the second decan and fifth duad of Gemini. This placement is described as adding charm to the traditional Gemini qualities, as well as softening the harsh characteristic of the eclipse originating in Gemini with "pleasing attributes and intellectual traits," (Rose Lineman, 1986). Similar to a natal chart, these traits carry over into subsequent eclipses of this series.
This annular solar eclipse will be visible from some areas of Central Africa, southern Pakistan, northern India and China. A partial eclipse will be visible from some areas north and south of the eclipse's main path. Remember that standard sunglasses are not enough to protect eyes from looking at a solar eclipse.
The Sun's transition over the 0 degree of Cancer is the beginning of a new season, the solstice of summer in the northern hemisphere and winter in the southern, marking a power point or critical degree that tends to intensify the Cancer traits of protection, emotionally sensitive, and sympathetic. The Moon joining up with the Moon at this critical degree in its home territory truly amplifies all these traits. With the solar eclipse forming a square to Mars, out of sign in Pisces, there is the added potential for anger and frustration, but not without choices. Take the high road, whenever possible today.
Mercury is retrograde in Cancer, which started on June 18 to last until July 12. Mercury is forming a sextile to Uranus in Taurus, forcing us to learn to trust, follow our intuition, along with doing the research necessary to know the facts. Of course, with Mercury's retrograde, finding the facts may not be as easy as it sounds.
Venus is also retrograde (still) to end on June 25 in the sign of Gemini. Venus in Gemini loves a good party, but remember to keep it safe. A personal distancing party might just lift a few spirits at this time. Venus is trine to Saturn retrograde in Aquarius. This, of course, adds complexity to the stabilizing influence that is normally associated with this aspect. Creativity will help us to make better use of this connection.
As mentioned earlier, Mars is in Pisces. It is forming a sextile to Jupiter and Pluto retrogrades in Capricorn along with a conjunction of Neptune. Mars' transit through Pisces tends to be restless and unfocused, because we feel compelled to confront those with whom we disagree, but at the same time have a rather strange fantasy as to the outcome of those confrontations while Mars moves through this sign. It can be a really difficult time to sort through our feelings unless we recognize that this is "normal" and need to be flexible enough to accept that this is the norm until Mars moves into Aries. Factor in the fact that Jupiter and Pluto are retrograde in this connection to Mars and Neptune, and, of course, everything feels topsy turvy in a world that feels a bit surreal. Sorting through the hyperbole and the hegemonies is setting the tone that will eventually become the new reality.
As mentioned, Jupiter in Capricorn is retrograde while conjunct to Pluto, also retrograde in Capricorn. Rebelling against domination seems inevitable. This is the push back against the underbelly of power and corruption. It will be scary to some and exhilarating to others. All the aspects of Mars and Neptune in Pisces to Jupiter and Pluto retrogrades in Capricorn is a recipe for change as they slowly undulate through their perceived positions of dominance and control.
Overall, this solar eclipse is one of change. Interestingly it is a chart dominated with feminine receptives, which is speaking to the less powerful and the oppressed. People are inclined to push back when we collectively find a common cause. The majority of the planet placements are in Earth and Water elements but the majority of these placements are in Cardinal qualities, adding a different spin on the circumstances and the potential outcomes. Remember that the influence of a solar eclipse will begin several weeks before it occurs, and last several weeks afterward.
Meditation for the June 21st Solar Eclipse
William Blake said, "the road of excess leads to the Palace of Wisdom." This may be true -- but will the traveler arrive?
