Fun Eclipse Facts - There are always two+ eclipse seasons in a calendar year. On occasion, there will be three but there will never be four. An eclipse season will always have, at the minimum, one solar eclipse plus one lunar eclipse. On occasion, there will be two lunar eclipses with a solar eclipse between them during a season, OR two solar eclipses and one lunar eclipse. The eclipses occur like "clockwork" so to speak in that they can be determined by the number of days between each event. Eclipses belong to "families" of lunar nodes. When solar eclipse series originate from the southern hemisphere, it will be paired with a lunar eclipse that originated from the northern hemisphere, and vice versa, during each eclipse season. There are 38 eclipse seasons associated with the 19 lunar node families that occur over a 17 year period.
Today's Lunar Eclipse belongs to the lunar saros series 129. This series originated June 10, 1351 (adjusted for the old calendar to June 18, 1351), from the southern hemisphere and belongs to the 2nd nodal family. It will be a total eclipse visible from portions of East Africa and Central Asia. The eclipse will begin over South America, and as the Earth rotates, the event will be visible over West and Central Africa, almost all of Europe, then setting over East Asia and Australia. Hopefully, the skies will be clear along its path. During the total eclipse, the moon will appear to turn copper in color, as the result of the earth obscuring the reflection from the Sun. The total eclipse, one of the longest this century, will last a little longer than 1 hour and 40 minutes (103 minutes). Regardless of whether you are in the path of the eclipse, you should be able to see some of it, especially in Africa, Europe and Asia. It will not be visible at all from North America due to the time of day the eclipse is occurring.
As we have learned over time, the influences of the original eclipse in the series is similar to a natal chart and that personality, per se, carries over into each subsequent eclipse associated with the series. The originating eclipse occured in Sagittarius at 26 degrees (decan of Leo ruled by the Sun and duad of Libra ruled by Venus), indicating that there is likely to be emotional optimism encompassing confidence through artistic talents. Carrying that influence over into the current Lunar Eclipse chart, we can build up the positive connections we make with the confidence of our skills and abilities.
Today's chart starts with the Sun at home, in the sign of Leo, lending confidence to our attitudes. We are likely to feel more generous of our time and skills, however, we may be inclined to try to do too much, which can impact our health. The Sun opposing the Moon in Aquarius can cause uneasiness based on how others treat us. The Moon is conjunct with Mars retrograde, which is transiting Out of Bounds (OOB) and will be discussed later in this piece. There is a Fixed element T-square from the Sun and Moon opposition with Uranus in Taurus. The potential for clashing in disagreement with others, to surviving a natural catastrophe, is always possible; however the chances are greatly increased today. Be ready to slow down the action process, or at the very least, quickly think before acting. Impulsive reactions can cause us more harm than good, in light of today's aspects.
Mercury stationed retrograde in Leo yesterday and for the next 20 something days (until August 19), we will be struggling with repeats and re-dos of all things ruled by Mercury. With Mercury in Leo, the Leo-based life factors such as children, luck and risk, vitality, even our vital health organs could become fodder for Mercury's retrograde mess-making ways. At least for today, there are not any major aspects to Mercury that we would also need to factor in.
Venus in Virgo tends to cool down our approach to interpersonal relationships. It is not that we are less passionate, but we are more inclined to be more critical of our expectations within our feelings. We may be hyper-critical of ourselves, or critical of what we perceive of others. Either way, it tends to put a damper on how we interact with others. A proactive way to use Venus in Virgo is to hone our talents. Also, while Venus transits Virgo, we may be drawn to co-workers, or to situations at work that might add to our job responsibilities. We also want to be aware of health matters, particularly while Venus is opposing Neptune retrograde in Pisces, and trine to Pluto retrograde in Capricorn. It might just blow the lid off of anything that we want to keep confidential, or were simply not aware of until now.
The Mars retrograde in Aquarius is considered to be a "repressed" influence on us, in that we may hold back on our intentions for way too long, with an explosive outcome that leaves us wondering "where did that come from." We may self-medicate to try to deal with the frustrations we feel, or we might push ourselves into situations that feel chaotic in an effort to find control. Add in the fact that Mars is transiting OOB, and we will likely discover that the majority of situations in our life are well beyond our control. We need to remember that we should not try to control other people, and we cannot control Mother Nature. Instead, we should focus our efforts on controlling ourselves; exercise, staying fit, eating healthier, developing positive relationships, finding work that is fulfilling and rewarding, building healthy attitudes to events that we cannot control, are the best way to counteract this Mars transit for the time-being. As mentioned in an earlier piece, Mars will be transiting OOB for a several months, and while it stays OOB, we will feel more and more drained, regardless of whether it is transiting retrograde or direct.
Jupiter has been moving forward through Scorpio since July 10 and catching back up through the shadow of the retrograde transit. Jupiter is trine to Neptune retrograde in Pisces. At some level, this placement is almost like a cradle pattern to Venus, Neptune and Pluto. Although the power of the pattern is not as solid, Jupiter's connection to Neptune retrograde does get to feed off of the energy of Venus and Pluto. Remember that Jupiter's nature is to expand whatever it touches. So, with that in mind, and looking back at the Venus transit, the events may be much bigger than we anticipate, even though Jupiter is not directly forming any aspects to Venus or Pluto. The indirect connection through Neptune may be sufficient to make situations feel as though there is tooooo much of something going on.
Saturn in Capricorn is retrograde motion while forming a trine to Uranus in Taurus. Similar to Jupiter, this is another indirect aspect that ties it to the full moon via the T-square from Uranus. While normally this aspect might contribute to will-power and organization, with Saturn's retrograde transit, we won't be quite so lucky. We are more likely to be challenged to find these traits rather than having them fall into our laps.
To round up today's eclipse, similar to the Solar Eclipse two weeks ago, the majority of the planets are transiting through feminine receptives causing us to feel a desire to be self-sufficient for personal survival reasons. We can be strong, but others are not likely to see or comprehend the type of strength we are exhibiting. The element placements are fairly balanced, which is helpful in allowing us to make better choices and rely on our intuition or, at the very least, past experiences for making decisions. There are more Fixed placements in this chart, which can actually slow our reaction time. In light of the layout of this chart, that might benefit us more than we realize.
Meditation for the July 27th Lunar Eclipse
I exist only for the world -- I belong to no one, least of all to myself.
