Sun is Capricorn, 15° 25'
Moon is Capricorn, 15° 25'

What an interesting year 2019 is starting out to be. The year starts a new moon eclipse and will end with a new moon eclipse, also known as a solar eclipse. First the warning. Never look directly at the Sun, even during a solar eclipse without the right type of eye protection. The intense rays will cause blindness. This first eclipse of the year is occurring near the North Pole. The partial eclipse is starting over NE Asia and ending over the N Pacific. Some areas that will, potentially have eclipse visibility are Korea, Japan, China, Russia, the Arctic and Alaska.

A little history. This eclipse is waning in the 122 saros series, having originated April 17, 991 (calendar corrects to April 22). Solar Saros Series 122 originated in the first decan and duad of Taurus, All three areas of this sign are ruled by Venus, with a strongly fixed influence of stability and endurance. This chart reflects a strong desire for security and safety. When overdone, it culminates into an obstinate and stubborn influence. This original chart carries over into all subsequent eclipses in the 122 series. This eclipse season will be the last of the 2nd Nodal family eclipses for approximately 18 years. The lunar eclipse in two weeks will wrap up the 2nd Nodal eclipse family. To learn more about eclipses, visit our eclipse article.

The new moon in Capricorn encourages us to set goals and work towards attaining them. We tend to be more goal oriented yet practical while the Sun transits through the sign of Capricorn. This is partly why we feel compelled to make resolutions for the New Year. That Capricorn motivation to be better is always present for the start of the year. Unless those resolutions are realistic, we are unlikely to sustain the attempt once the Sun moves out of Capricorn around January 20th.

This new moon is in a mid-point conjunct to Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn. Talk about taking everything too seriously? We may feel as though the weight of the world is on our shoulders with this eclipse season. The only way to deal effectively with any negativity that culminates from this chart is to be strategic and forthright. In other words, we need to protect our reputation by working harder and smarter. Pluto and Saturn are likely to cause our lackluster moments to become all the more apparent to others. For the moment, the focus is on ourselves. That old adages, "You must take care of yourself before caring for others" is especially true, today. The eclipse is also sextile to Neptune in Pisces. This connection can sometimes slip us up. It can be difficult to tell the difference between fantasy and psychic intuition. It may be wise to NOT assume anything during this time. We would be better served by doing our homework via reliable research.

Mercury recently ingressed Capricorn, making it the fifth planetary influence in Capricorn for this eclipse. Our thinking is likely to become methodical and deliberate. We can also become overwhelmed with too many observations. Stay on task and don't let depression sneak in at this time. Mercury is square to Mars in Aries, along with an out of sign trine to Uranus retrograde in Aries. The square aspect to Mars will have us easily tripped up by instant anger if others intentionally or accidentally offend. The trine to Uranus retrograde is not at all helpful as we are likely to misinterpret the meanings of words, events, and symbols. What we think we should be receiving or will be getting, is not likely to occur. It's not about "what we deserve" but what we have to learn in the process.

Venus in Scorpio can tend to cause us to be easily infatuated with situations/others that challenge our normal inclinations. That can be either for the best, or not. But, be aware that we don't always know what we want or need until we explore other options. Today, Venus is trine to Mars in Aries. This heightens our desire to explore the unknown within relationships.

As already mentioned several times, Mars is now in the sign of Aries. Mars ingressed its home territory on January 2. With Mars back at home, we are more likely to feel invigorated, more physical in nature, and willing to take more risks as we venture out. Remember, this means most others are also feeling this way. What's that precautionary warning? Oh, right, "Watch out for the other guy!"

Jupiter is almost at mid point in Sagittarius. We are busy learning a lot about trust, value and other philosophies. This week, Jupiter is square to Neptune in Pisces. This can be one of those periods where we learn by exploring the unknown. We can learn even more by having an open heart, but not taking everything at face value. We need to ensure that our brains are balancing fact and fake.

Uranus is ending the retrograde transit today and this will, for all intents and purposes (for the next few weeks) be the last time Uranus is in Aries for a very long time. It has been interesting watching the chaotic dance of changes that culminated as Uranus transited Aries, especially while squaring Pluto in Capricorn. The "Spring" uprisings from some eastern blocs and the populist upswell in some western societies. It was, most definitely, an interesting time, globally, for many societies. Uranus will move back into Taurus the first week of March. This will be the last of the planetary retrograde transits until Mercury stations retrograde on March 5th.

Overall, this solar eclipse chart is quite unbalanced. It is overloaded with feminine receptive placements. This can tend to cause us to become easily depressed if we don't find the right outlets for our needs. We may feel the need to hunker down in an effort to protect ourselves and our loved ones. On the short term, this might work, but will quickly deplete our energy levels. The majority of the planets are transiting through Earth and Water elements with no placements in the Air element. On the other hand, the chart is overloaded with Cardinal placements that have us chomping at the bit to get something done, and now. It's a confluence of contradicting tendencies. We simply need to take the time to sort through the patterns and puzzles that we will encounter with this solar eclipse.

Happy New Year!
