Solar Eclipse
in: Cancer 20°

July 12, 2018 @ 7:48 p.m. PDT -7
Sun is Cancer, 20° 41'
Moon is Cancer, 20° 41'

This solar eclipse during the new moon in the sign of Cancer is occurring in the southern hemisphere. Saros series 117, which indicates that it is one of the older ones, is getting close to the end of the series. As such, all the remaining eclipses in the solar saros 117 will be partial and gradually become shorter in duration with each event. The northern eclipse is in the 2nd nodal family, since all eclipses occur close to the lunar node points. Remember that nodes are not planets, but are calculated points of the moon relative to the earth.

There is a replacement series for 2N (2nd nodal family originating from the Northern Hemisphere). We will experience the 2N replacement eclipse in a month. The dual eclipses have been occurring since about 1928.

Some facts - the original eclipse of the Solar Saros 117 was June 24, 792 (old calendar system is June 28, 792, as shown on the chart at the bottom of this page). The final eclipse of Saros 117 will be August 3, 2054. The last time we experienced an eclipse from Saros 117 was on July 1, 2000. There will only be two more eclipses for this series, July 23, 2036 and then the final one in 2054.

When looking at the original chart of Saros 117 (shown below), we see that the new moon occurred in the early degrees of Cancer. Similar to a natal chart, the traits of the planetary alignments carry over into each of the subsequent eclipses. Rose Lineman describes this original eclipse as being responsive to both the emotional and intellectual by, essentially absorbing the tendency of Cancer's nature both by expression and accommodation, (Lineman, 1986).

Today's eclipse, the Sun and Moon in Cancer meet up to help us explore the depths of compassion and shared family experiences. The new moon (solar eclipse) is trine to Neptune retrograde in Pisces lending creativity and awareness to our day. When Neptune is retrograde, there is less confusion, but there is still a sense of mystery that we need to navigate. The new moon is opposing Pluto retrograde in Capricorn, and with Neptune's placement, is forming a wedge pattern. This may be a good time to let go of something that is no longer working in our life. We can use this time to start a new project or move past a project that has us stumped.

Mercury in Leo can sometimes cause us to be a bit stubborn in our ways of thinking. It is a good day to wait when we encounter a situation that causes us to shake our heads. Don't be so quick to react with feelings of jealousy or indignation. If we jump to a conclusion, we may miss the true intent, especially if we factor in the square of Mercury to Jupiter in Scorpio. Scorpio's influence via Jupiter is likely to mix in some hidden meaning today.

Start handling contracts and Mercury-influenced product purchases (i.e. computers, smartphones, plane tickets) now before Mercury's retrograde motion from July 26 to August 19. The lunar eclipse of July 27 will amplify the Mercury retrograde traits.

Venus in Virgo is in a Grand Earth Trine with Saturn retrograde in Capricorn and Uranus in Taurus. This trine adds a layer of strength and endurance to our day. We can easily tap into patience through our creative side.

A health alert as Mars is retrograde and transiting Out of Bounds. Mars is currently transiting Aquarius, and in retrograde motion, will move back into Capricorn in early August. It will station direct (start moving forward) on August 27. The more complex factor of this Mars transit is that it is also transiting Out of Bounds for the second time this year. The OOB transit of Mars earlier this year lasted 21 day in March and April. This time, the OOB will last 79 days, almost four times longer.

Mars' lengthy OOB transit can cause us to start feeling drained and vulnerable over time. Events that occur tend to overwhelm us. Individuals who are inclined to be nervous or worry (or have anxiety disorders) are more likely to need emotional assistance through the next few months. Be willing to seek help from a trusted therapist or doctor if the symptoms keep getting worse or simply won't subside. Another population that could be impacted by the OOB Mars transit will be people who have auto-immune disorders. Until September 24, every time Mars makes an aspect to a planet, whether it is a planet in transit, or a planet in our natal charts, we may end up feeling wiped out. The next few months, we will need to take extra care of ourselves.

As some of you are aware, Chiron moved into the sign of Aries on April 17. On July 4, it stationed retrograde and will move back into Pisces on September 25. There is a strong potential for physical and mental health matters to come unhinged during this period as Chiron can impact us in ways we can't always detect until later.

Jupiter's retrograde motion in Scorpio ended on July 10. Our luck might improve, but, with Jupiter, luck is such a subjective concept. Jupiter is trine to Neptune retrograde in Pisces. This connects Jupiter back to the eclipse in Cancer through Neptune's position. Remember also that Mercury is square to Jupiter, compounding our communications with others. While we may think we are being "intuitive" what we may discover is that we are only scratching the surface of understanding. Work extra hard to temper opinions and be open to another perspective.

To wrap up this solar eclipse's impact on us today, we are likely to feel somewhat lop-sided with our emotions and memories. There are only two placements in the masculine receptives, leaving us feeling vulnerable, unless we are able to tap into our feminine strengths of resilience and endurance. The majority of the planets are transiting through Earth and Water element signs. If we don't understand how to utilize these energies, we are likely to feel heavy-hearted and bogged down in despair. These should be the placements that teach us patience, practicality and adaptability.

As with most solar eclipses, the influences were, most likely, being felt several weeks ago, and will continue to be felt for several more weeks. The strength of this particular eclipse is waning as it is older. The eclipse in August will be more potent, however, we may not be able to know which eclipse's influence is impacting us the most. There is the potential for a double-whammy impact.
